A widespread electronic toll collection system failure in Japan causes major traffic jams and minor accidents.
On April 6, 2025, a system failure affected over 90 electronic toll collection lanes across Tokyo and six other Japanese prefectures, causing significant traffic jams.
Central Nippon Expressway Co. has allowed vehicles to pass through these lanes without immediate payment and is investigating the cause.
Drivers are advised to pay tolls later via a QR code on the company's website.
The failure led to minor incidents, including a four-vehicle crash with five injuries on the Tomei Expressway in Aichi Prefecture.
This is the first large-scale ETC system failure since privatization in 2005.
