Inmates at San Quentin join service dogs they raised, part of a program seeing higher success rates.
Inmates at San Quentin prison have reunited with the service dogs they helped raise through a program run by Canine Companions, a nonprofit that provides free service dogs to people with disabilities.
The program, which started in April 2023, involves inmates raising puppies for 16 to 17 months, teaching them around 20 skills.
After leaving the prison, the dogs undergo additional professional training.
The program has expanded to include 16 trainers and two dog sitters, training eight puppies.
The dogs trained in prison have a 10% higher success rate as service dogs compared to others, thanks to the time and care provided by the inmates.
