Rio Tinto begins building local iron ore rail cars in Australia, with the first delivered by Gemco Rail.
Rio Tinto has commenced building its first locally made iron ore rail cars in Western Australia, with the first wagon delivered by Perth-based Gemco Rail.
Under a $150 million deal, 100 rail cars will be manufactured over six years, with 40 initially built at Gemco's Perth facility and 60 at a new Karratha site.
The project, supported by a $6.9 million government grant, is expected to create up to 25 new jobs and boost local manufacturing.
