José Adolfo Macías Villamar, the fugitive leader of the violent Ecuadorian gang Los Choneros, has been indicted in New York City on charges of smuggling cocaine into the U.S. Macías, also known as "Fito," escaped from an Ecuadorian prison last year and is not in U.S. custody.
The gang is accused of using hitmen, bribes, and military weapons, and has been classified as a terrorist organization by Ecuador.
The indictment also includes charges of smuggling firearms from the U.S. to Ecuador with help from Mexican cartels.
Ecuador offers a $1 million reward for information leading to his capture.
