South Carolina reports first drop in drug overdose deaths in a decade, but fentanyl remains a leading cause.

South Carolina saw a 6.1% drop in drug overdose deaths in 2023, marking the first decline in over a decade. Despite this, fentanyl was involved in 1,550 of the 2,157 overdose deaths. The decrease is credited to improved prevention, treatment, and recovery efforts, as well as expanded access to resources like naloxone and fentanyl test strips. However, overdose deaths increased in 15 of the state's counties.
