NASA's JWST confirms asteroid 2024 YR4 won't hit Earth, possibly heading for the Moon instead.
NASA's James Webb Space Telescope has updated the trajectory of asteroid 2024 YR4, reducing its risk of hitting Earth to zero.
The asteroid, previously estimated to have a 3.1% chance of impacting Earth on December 22, 2032, may now potentially collide with the Moon instead.
Further observations by JWST in May 2025 will refine the asteroid's orbit and thermal properties.
If it had hit Earth, the impact would have released energy equivalent to 8 megatons of TNT, similar to the destructive power of a large nuclear weapon.
