In Malaysia, villagers fire traditional cannons to herald Eid al-Fitr, a custom since 1937.
In the Malaysian village of Kampung Talang, cannons known as "meriam talang" are fired to mark the start of Eid al-Fitr celebrations, a tradition dating back to 1937.
Originally made from soil and bamboo, the cannons are now steel, with up to 2 metric tons of cobalt used annually to fire over 80 cannons.
The tradition, believed to scare off wild animals, is cherished by villagers and continued by the younger generation.
