Oxford English Dictionary adds "gigil" and other "untranslatable" words from Asia.
The Oxford English Dictionary (OED) added "gigil," a Filipino term describing the urge to pinch or squeeze something cute, along with other "untranslatable" words like the Singaporean exclamation "alamak" for surprise or outrage.
The OED now includes over 600,000 words and regularly considers new additions from diverse languages to fill lexical gaps.
Other new entries include "videoke," a local karaoke version, and "salakot," a type of wide-brimmed hat from the Philippines.
