Former minister refuses Jabiluka uranium mine lease renewal, sparking legal battle with mining firm.
The Northern Territory's former mining minister, Mark Monaghan, refused to renew a lease for Rio Tinto's subsidiary, Energy Resources of Australia (ERA), to operate the Jabiluka uranium mine.
The decision was influenced by plans to extend Kakadu National Park into the area, and federal Resources Minister Madeleine King is accused of bias in her advice to Monaghan.
ERA has filed a lawsuit against King, Monaghan, and other government bodies, alleging King made a promise to the Mirarr traditional owners to not mine Jabiluka.
ERA states it has no plans to develop the area without the Mirarr's approval.
