An Irish engineer, Iskilu Awolumate, was sentenced to 18 months in prison for his role in a smishing scam that targeted Permanent TSB bank customers. The scam involved sending fraudulent SMS messages to customers, tricking them into giving access to their accounts. Awolumate handled the proceeds of the crime, with €25,800 passing through his account. Though no money was recovered, the bank reimbursed the affected customers. Awolumate pleaded guilty and was found to be knowingly involved in the large-scale fraud.
