Taiwan mandates AIS installation on ships to boost security, curb smuggling, after Chinese boat incident.
Taiwan plans to require all ships, except those on inland waterways, to install Automatic Identification Systems (AIS) to enhance maritime security and prevent Chinese incursions.
This follows an incident last year involving a Chinese boat.
The AIS installation will also combat smuggling and improve safety for port staff and the Coast Guard.
Subsidies are being planned to help cover the costs of installation, with non-compliance facing fines.
