Alabama Senate passes "Second Chance Act," allowing resentencing for some nonviolent life sentence offenders.
The Alabama Senate has passed a bill, known as the "Second Chance Act," which allows resentencing for about 200 nonviolent offenders serving life sentences under an old habitual offender law.
The bill, approved 17-8, would enable inmates sentenced before 2000 to seek resentencing, with input from victims and prosecutors.
The legislation, endorsed by Republican Governor Kay Ivey, now moves to the House for further consideration.
