Widow of Aum Shinrikyo member speaks on death penalty 30 years after Tokyo subway attack.
Thirty years after the Aum Shinrikyo cult carried out a sarin gas attack on Tokyo's subway, killing 14 and injuring thousands, Yuki Niimi, the widow of cult member Tomomitsu Niimi, has spoken out.
Tomomitsu and 12 others, including leader Shoko Asahara, were executed in 2018.
Yuki, once a member of a cult successor group, believes the death penalty was unavoidable and that the only way to atone is by "paying restitution."
Despite Tomomitsu's lack of remorse, he reportedly came to see Asahara's teachings as false.
Aum's successor groups still operate in Japan.
