The National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) identified a serious safety issue in the airspace around Ronald Reagan Washington National Airport after a midair collision between an American Airlines regional jet and a U.S. Army Black Hawk helicopter killed all 67 people on board.
The NTSB urged the FAA to implement urgent safety measures, including prohibiting helicopter operations near the airport when certain runways are in use.
An NTSB analysis found at least one close call each month between commercial planes and helicopters from 2011 to 2024, with over half of these incidents involving helicopters flying at unsafe altitudes, often at night.
The investigation into the crash is expected to take about a year.
