NEA scraps requirement for artists to reject "gender ideology" after ACLU lawsuit but keeps funding ban.
The National Endowment for the Arts (NEA) has dropped a requirement for applicants to promise not to use federal funds to "promote gender ideology" after the American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU) sued, arguing the term was unconstitutionally vague.
The NEA had added this stipulation last month to comply with President Trump's executive order restricting federal recognition of gender beyond biological sex.
However, projects that align with "gender ideology" remain ineligible for funding.
The ACLU has also filed for a preliminary injunction on the funding prohibition ahead of the March 24 deadline.
