Canada awards $6.4 billion in contracts to build two new polar icebreakers, reviving domestic shipbuilding.
The Canadian government has awarded two major contracts totaling $6.4 billion to build new polar icebreakers for the Canadian Coast Guard.
Davie Shipbuilding will construct one icebreaker in Quebec for $3.25 billion, with completion expected by 2030, while Seaspan's Vancouver Shipyards will start building the other in April, under a $3.15 billion contract.
These contracts, part of the National Shipbuilding Strategy, aim to renew Coast Guard and Navy fleets and support Canada's shipbuilding industry.
This marks the first time in decades that a polar icebreaker will be built in Canada.
