Houston plans major downtown revamp, expanding convention center and adding a large plaza.
Mayor John Whitmire and Houston First Corporation have unveiled plans to revitalize East Downtown Houston, focusing on expanding the George R. Brown Convention Center by 700,000 square feet and creating a new 100,000-square-foot pedestrian plaza.
Funded by state hotel occupancy tax revenue, the project aims to transform the area into a vibrant convention and entertainment district, with no cost to local taxpayers.
Phase one, expected to open in May 2028, includes connecting the convention center to the Toyota Center, while the full project is set to be completed by 2038.
