Man sentenced to nearly 5 years for altering and depositing over $1.2M in fake money orders.
A Lancaster, California man, Sterlyn Lee Smith Jr., has been sentenced to nearly five years in prison for a money order fraud scheme.
Between 2013 and 2019, Smith and his accomplices altered and deposited over 1,200 fake money orders worth more than $1.2 million into bank accounts under other names, withdrawing cash before the fraud was detected.
Smith, who pleaded guilty to two bank fraud charges, will also pay over $432,000 in restitution.
