The Indian rupee has sharply depreciated against the US dollar due to new economic policies and trade tensions.

The Indian rupee has depreciated significantly against the US dollar in early 2025, more than half of what it lost in all of 2024. This depreciation is attributed to the Reserve Bank of India's new policy under Governor Sanjay Malhotra, which allows the rupee to fluctuate more freely. Additionally, the ongoing trade tensions, including US tariffs, have put further pressure on the rupee, as the US is India's largest export market.
