A 50% council tax hike for second homes in Gwynedd led to Mark Dyson selling his renovated home there.

Mark Dyson, a 67-year-old from Birmingham, sold his second home in North Wales due to a 50% increase in council tax for second homes in Gwynedd, which now totals 150%. The tax hike, aimed at tackling homelessness, led to a reduction of 500 second homes in the county. Dyson, who spent £100,000 refurbishing the home, felt the tax increase was unfair. Gwynedd Council and the Welsh Government have introduced measures to manage holiday homes and boost local housing.
