In 2024, the Philippine weather agency PAGASA retired eight tropical cyclone names due to the storms' significant destruction, marking the most names removed since the naming system began in 2001.
Names are retired if storms cause over 300 deaths or $18 million in damages.
The retired names—Aghon, Enteng, Julian, Kristine, Leon, Nika, Ofel, and Pepito—will be replaced by Amuyao, Edring, Josefa, Kidul, Lekep, Nanolay, Onos, and Puwok starting January 1, 2028.
