South Africa urges Google to pay up to $30 million yearly to support local media impacted by its algorithms.
South Africa's Competition Commission has recommended that Google pay local media between R300 million to R500 million annually for three to five years to compensate for lost revenue due to its search algorithm favoring foreign media.
The report, part of the Media and Digital Platforms Market Inquiry, also suggests changes to Google's search algorithms to boost local media traffic and proposes similar actions against other tech giants like Meta and TikTok.
The commission will accept public submissions until April 7.
