Researchers find omega-3 fatty acids may protect against motor neurone disease and dementia.
Researchers at the UK Dementia Research Institute found that increasing omega-3 fatty acid levels in the brain may protect against motor neurone disease (MND) and dementia.
Studies on fruit flies with a genetic mutation linked to MND and frontotemporal dementia showed an 83% increase in survival when omega-3 fatty acids were directly delivered to brain cells.
The researchers plan to test these findings in human clinical trials.
