A head-on collision on Queen Ka‘ahumanu Highway in North Kona killed a Waimea couple, Reginald and Colette Tolentino, in their silver Kia sedan on Tuesday morning.
The 51-year-old husband and 55-year-old wife were attempting to pass multiple vehicles, including a fuel-carrying tractor-trailer, when their car collided with a northbound 2004 Nissan pickup truck.
The pickup driver, also 55, suffered life-threatening injuries.
This incident marks the sixth and seventh traffic fatalities on the island this year, up from four at this time last year.
