Pakistan reports a $420M current account deficit in January, reversing a seven-month surplus trend.
In January 2025, Pakistan's current account posted a $420 million deficit, marking the first deficit since July 2024 and a 4% increase from the same period last year.
Despite this, the current account showed a $682 million surplus for the first seven months of the fiscal year, compared to a $1.801 billion deficit last year.
Exports rose 8%, imports increased 15%, and remittances grew by 25%.
The deficit poses risks to the exchange rate and foreign reserves, with the IMF expected to seek repayment sources for the country's debt.
