Manitoba launches annual ice-breaking program on the Red River to prevent ice jams and flooding.
Manitoba has started its annual ice-breaking program on the Red River to prevent ice jams and flooding.
This operation, which began in 2006, uses remote-controlled units and icebreakers to clear about 28 kilometers of ice from Netley Marsh to Selkirk.
The work, running until March 15, also plans operations on the Icelandic River at Riverton.
Notices will be posted in work areas, and river users and ice fishers are advised to stay clear and remove any structures from the affected zones.
