Brain bleeds double the risk of developing dementia within 5.6 years, new study finds.
Researchers from Weill Cornell Medicine discovered that experiencing a brain bleed, or intracranial hemorrhage, doubles the risk of developing dementia later in life.
Analyzing data from over 14,000 people who had brain bleeds between 2008 and 2018, they found a two-fold increase in dementia diagnoses within about 5.6 years post-bleed.
This study highlights the need for regular cognitive screening for those who have had brain hemorrhages.
