Wisconsin's Governor proposes a $500M plan to close old prisons and reform the state’s corrections system.
Wisconsin Governor Tony Evers proposes a $500 million plan to overhaul the state’s corrections system by closing the second-oldest prison, built in the 1800s, and reforming facilities plagued by issues like deaths, assaults, and lawsuits.
The plan includes closing juvenile correctional facilities, converting the Lincoln Hills campus to a medium-security adult prison, and transforming Waupun’s oldest prison into a vocational training center.
The proposal also expands early release options for nonviolent offenders and avoids building a new prison.
Approval from the Republican-controlled Legislature is required.
