UK's poorest now spend 4.8% of their income on council taxes, triple the increase of the richest.
Poorest UK households are paying a growing share of their income on council taxes, with the poorest fifth now spending 4.8% of their income on it, up from 2.9% in 2002.
This increase is three times higher than for the richest households, due to rising bills and reduced financial support.
The Resolution Foundation warns that the situation is becoming increasingly regressive, similar to the poll tax of the 1990s, with the poorest spending almost as much on council tax as on income tax.
