The U.S. has released Russian cybercriminal Alexander Vinnik, who operated a major cryptocurrency exchange implicated in money laundering, as part of a prisoner swap that secured the release of American teacher Marc Fogel from Russia. Vinnik, who pleaded guilty to money laundering conspiracy in 2024, forfeited over $100 million in proceeds from his criminal activities. Fogel was detained in Russia since 2021.
