Canada marks former Kamloops residential school as a historic site of cultural genocide.
The Kamloops Indian Residential School in Canada has been designated as a national historic site, marking it as a site of cultural genocide against Indigenous peoples. The school, which operated from 1890 to 1969, is now a memorial and educational center, renamed the Chief Louis Centre. In 2021, over 200 potential unmarked graves were discovered on the site. The designation acknowledges the systemic abuse and forced assimilation of Indigenous children.
