Miami airport handles 940 million flower stems ahead of Valentine's Day, mainly from Colombia and Ecuador.

Ahead of Valentine's Day, Miami International Airport processed about 940 million stems of cut flowers, with 90% of the fresh-cut flowers sold in the U.S. for the holiday passing through Miami. The remaining 10% go through Los Angeles. Flowers, primarily from Colombia and Ecuador, are transported by Avianca Cargo, which moved about 18,000 tons on 300 flights in the past three weeks. Miami's flower imports, valued over $1.6 billion, make up nearly 400,000 tons of the airport's cargo. Agricultural specialists check the flowers for harmful pests and diseases.
