Man sentenced to 12 to 50 years for sexually assaulting a minor, solved through DNA after 17 years.

A Kalamazoo man, Shawn Robinson Hopkins, has been sentenced to 12 to 50 years in prison for sexually assaulting a 14-year-old in 2005. The case was unsolved for 17 years until DNA evidence led to Hopkins' identification in 2022. This conviction marks the 22nd success of the Kalamazoo Sexual Assault Kit Initiative (SAKI) unit in solving cold cases. The victim, now 33, expressed her ongoing trauma during the sentencing.
