Art historians uncovered a hidden woman's portrait beneath Picasso's "Portrait of Mateu Fernández de Soto."

Art historians at the Courtauld Institute of Art in London used infrared and X-ray imaging to uncover a hidden portrait of a woman beneath Pablo Picasso's 1901 painting "Portrait of Mateu Fernández de Soto." The woman's identity is unknown, but her hairstyle matches those of other women Picasso painted in Paris in 1901. The discovery reveals that Picasso repainted the canvas several times, possibly transitioning into his Blue Period style. The painting will be on display at the Courtauld Gallery in London from February 14 to May 26.
