Toad rescue group closes road, patrols nightly to help over 3,000 amphibians migrate safely.
The Charlcombe Toad Rescue Group in Somerset is preparing for the annual amphibian migration season by closing Charlcombe Lane until March 25 and patrolling nightly to help over 3,000 toads, frogs, and newts cross safely to their breeding site. Since 2003, this effort has dramatically reduced casualties from 62% to 6%. Despite challenges like habitat loss and climate change, the initiative supports the local amphibian population.
