A rāhui, or Māori restriction, has been placed on Maketū Beach in New Zealand until Feb. 15 after a man's death.

A traditional Māori restriction, called a rāhui, has been placed on Maketū Beach in New Zealand after an unresponsive man was found on the shore and could not be revived. The rāhui, which aims to respect the deceased and protect the environment, covers the area between Okurei Point and Little Waihi Bar and will stay in effect until February 15. A blessing has also been conducted at the beach.
