Conservative leader Pierre Poilievre pledges Arctic military base and expanded navy for northern defense.
Conservative leader Pierre Poilievre promises to build a military base in Canada's Arctic, purchase two polar icebreakers for the navy, and double the size of the Canadian Rangers to 4,000 if elected. The base in Iqaluit would host an Air Force wing for defense and search and rescue. Two icebreakers for the navy and two for the Coast Guard are planned, with the navy's set to be operational by 2029.
