Syrian boat captain sentenced to three years for negligence leading to a migrant child's death.
A Syrian boat captain has been sentenced to three years in prison in Cyprus for the death of a three-year-old girl due to negligence. The captain was found guilty for failing to ensure the safety of 60 Syrian migrants on an overloaded, poorly equipped boat adrift for six days without proper supplies. Migrant arrivals in Cyprus have dropped significantly in recent years, from 17,278 in 2022 to 6,102 in 2024, following stricter government measures.
