Study reveals male Hoff crabs have larger claws than females to compete for mates near Antarctic vents.
Scientists from the universities of Portsmouth and Southampton found that male "Hoff crabs," named for their hairy chests resembling David Hasselhoff, have larger claws than females to fight for mates. These crabs, known as Kiwa tyleri, live near hydrothermal vents in Antarctica and feed on bacteria grown on their hair. This study, the first to show claw size differences in yeti crabs, could help researchers understand how life adapts to extreme environments.
