Nigeria sees fewer kidnappings but more victims as violence and extortion plague South-East.
Despite a 16.3% reduction in kidnapping incidents in Nigeria in 2024, the number of victims increased by 0.27%. In South-East Nigeria, non-state actors abducted at least 250 people and killed 200, while the police and military extorted billions of Naira from residents. The government has introduced a toll-free 112 hotline to report kidnappings and security threats, aiming to tackle ransom-driven abductions and address economic vulnerabilities driving crime.
