WCRC defends 15% staff increase to reduce consultant reliance, amid concerns over costs.

The West Coast Regional Council (WCRC) defended its 15% increase in staff numbers, now at 92 full-time equivalents, explaining it aims to reduce reliance on consultants. Deputy chair Peter Ewen and chief executive Darryl Lew noted the staff increase is meant to achieve planned outcomes more efficiently. Councillor Allan Birchfield, however, criticized the expansion, arguing it could be costly for ratepayers.
