New Zealand had its coldest January since 2017, with a nationwide average temperature of 16.4°C, 0.8°C below the 1991-2020 average. The central and southern North Island and much of the South Island experienced below-average temperatures, while the West Coast saw record-breaking sunshine hours. Many regions were drier than normal, with Auckland the warmest and Christchurch the wettest and least sunny among major cities.
