North Dakota considers bill expanding property tax relief for seniors and disabled, lowering eligibility age to 62.
North Dakota lawmakers are considering House Bill 1335, which aims to expand the homestead property tax credit for seniors and the permanently disabled.
The bill proposes lowering the qualifying age from 65 to 62, raising the annual income threshold from $40,000 to $70,000, and increasing the maximum qualifying income from $70,000 to $100,000.
It also eliminates property taxes on the first $200,000 of market value for homeowners earning $70,000 or less annually, and on the first $100,000 for those earning between $70,000 and $100,000.
The sponsor, Rep. Nels Christianson, believes the changes align tax policy with retirement age and could lead to $85.3 million in state reimbursements over two years.
