Irish parliament Speaker rules independent lawmakers backing the government can't form an opposition group.

The Speaker of Ireland's parliament, Verona Murphy, has ruled that independent TDs supporting the government cannot form an opposition group, denying them opposition speaking rights. This decision follows a dispute over speaking time that delayed the appointment of the Taoiseach. Murphy stated that she is not satisfied the TDs qualify as "in Opposition" under Standing Order 170. The ruling was welcomed by opposition parties, who argued it would dilute efforts to hold the government accountable.
