Big Creek Lake in Mobile has been permanently closed to boating and fishing to protect its role as a drinking water source. The closure follows the discovery of giant salvinia, an invasive species, in 2021. Despite MAWSS's efforts to implement monitoring and treatment programs, the permanent closure is seen as the most effective way to ensure the safety and reliability of the water supply for future generations.
