Newcastle's Lord Mayor, Nuatali Nelmes, resigns after 16 years to pursue new opportunities.
Newcastle's second-longest serving Lord Mayor, Nuatali Nelmes, has resigned after 16 years. Nelmes, who started in 2008 at 32, helped invest over $1 billion in local infrastructure and made Newcastle the first council in Australia to use 100% renewable energy. Her resignation, citing new career opportunities and family time, will lead to a countback likely resulting in former councillor Peta Winney-Baartz taking over.
