Mothers of twins are at a significantly higher risk of heart disease hospitalization postpartum, study shows.
Mothers of twins face a higher risk of heart disease hospitalizations within a year after birth compared to mothers of single babies, according to a study in the European Heart Journal. The research, analyzing 36 million US hospital deliveries from 2010 to 2020, found that readmissions for cardiovascular disease were higher in twin pregnancies (1,105.4 per 100,000 deliveries) than in single births (734.1 per 100,000 deliveries). The risk was even greater for mothers with high blood pressure during pregnancy.
