California honors Fred Korematsu, who fought against WWII Japanese American internment, on his namesake day.

California is observing Fred Korematsu Day on January 30th, honoring the civil rights activist who challenged the WWII incarceration of Japanese Americans. Arrested in 1942 for defying President Roosevelt's executive order, Korematsu's conviction was overturned in 1983 after new documents were found. The day, established in 2010, marks the first U.S. holiday named after an Asian American, celebrating his fight for civil liberties.
