Ancient lead pollution found in Aegean, pushing back industrial impact by 1,200 years.
Researchers have found the oldest evidence of lead pollution in the Aegean Sea region, dating back 5,200 years, 1,200 years earlier than previously recorded. The pollution originated from smelting copper and silver ores. Lead levels remained low until around 2,150 years ago, when a sharp increase coincided with the Roman conquest of Greece, marking a rise in mining and trade activities.
