Police Officer faces disciplinary action for insensitive arrest of IRA attack survivor at memorial.

The Police Ombudsman found that a PSNI officer failed to act sensitively during the arrest of Mark Sykes, a survivor of the 1992 Sean Graham bookmakers attack, at the 29th anniversary memorial in 2021. Despite no assault charges being brought, the Ombudsman recommended disciplinary action against the officer for the arrest and handcuffing, which was later upheld on appeal. The PSNI accepted recommendations to improve officer training on Troubles-related anniversaries and public order.
